Nearly three months ago, I decided to make a major change in my life by quitting my job of nearly 10 years. This was something I had been thinking about for a long time now, especially after the pandemic started. It was not an easy decision to make, mainly because the people I worked with were really great and I made friends with a lot of them, some of which I still keep in contact to this day. However, the state of my mental health is vastly more important and it had gotten increasingly worse with time.
I tried looking for another job while I was still employed but my mental health had gotten so bad that updating my resume, writing cover letters, and searching for another job while still maintaining my current position only worsened my anxiety. So, I bit the bullet and handed in my two weeks notice without a new job to start. I was terrified at first but once it was done, it was a huge relief. And I know this is going to sound cliché but a massive weight truly felt like it had been lifted off my shoulders. It was exhilarating.
The first three weeks of unemployment were amazing. During that period, it felt like an extended vacation because the reality of my decision hadn’t fully sunk in yet. I hadn’t felt that good in a long time. I was seeing vast improvements to my health already. Personally, I still have a ways to go but at least it’s easier to focus on myself now.
Since then, I’ve just been catching up on movies, TV shows, video games, and books. I made a trip to San Antonio and spent time with a friend of mine from college that I hadn’t seen in probably ten years. Otherwise, I’ve just been relaxing at home. I haven’t been as productive as I had initially planned and I keep feeling bad about it. But then I quickly remember that we don’t have to be productive all the time to exist on this planet. Working on yourself is just as important.
Which brings me to now. One thing I told myself when I quit was to get back to writing. I took my old WordPress blog and completely scrapped all the posts to start a fresh new website. I won’t go into too much detail but if you’d like, just check out the About section to get a general idea of where this is going and what you might see. In addition to new content, I will be picking up the novel I started writing back in 2013. Right now, I am roughly halfway finished with the first draft. Over the course of the last ten years, I wrote very infrequently; but now that I have time on my hands, I can finally give the novel the attention it needs to complete.
As I mentioned previously, I’ve been watching a lot of movies and TV shows since I left my job back in January, so I’ve decided that I’m going to write reviews. Sounds pretty basic, I know. But I want to put my own flair on it so maybe it’s entertaining enough to read.
My plan is to choose a TV show that I’ve never seen and do an episode by episode review as I make my way through the season or series. Maybe come up with some sort of rating system. I think it could be fun. Also, I’ll be writing random reviews in other areas such as movies or possibly video games that I’ve played. So, you may see some new posts about something other than the TV show I’m watching. For now, though, most of the shows I’ll be watching will have already aired so I won’t be writing too many reviews on shows currently airing. Maybe one day. Some posts might not be reviews at all but merely commentary on a particular franchise and other pop culture media. Like I said, this blog will be all over the place. Get ready.
Hopefully, this will become a regular thing. I’m not going to end every post like this but since it’s the first, feel free to like or leave a comment. Also, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me using the Contact link at the top of the home page.
